The 2006 Sports Awards brought together many of Northern Ireland's sporting fraternity. The awards identify sporting achievements and recognise those individuals, teams and organisations whose contribution to Northern Ireland sport has been outstanding.
This year’s event was a night filled with great emotion and pride. Pride for all the remarkable feats achieved by the sportsmen and sportswomen from Northern Ireland.
The Dungannon golfer Darren Clarke who won the coveted Sports Star of the Year crown was among the cream of Ulster’s sporting talent honoured at the awards ceremony.
Darren, who was unable to attend the glittering event due to prior golfing commitments, was hailed for his inspiring role in Europe’s victory over the US in the Ryder Cup. Other winners at the ceremony were Ulster and Irish rugby star Andrew Trimble, who scooped the Player of the Year title. Manager of the Year went to Linfield boss David Jeffrey and City of Derry Football Club was given special recognition for an outstanding 2006 season. GAA legend Paddy Doherty also earned a place in the Telegraph’s Hall of Fame and Ulster’s Rugby Team lifted the Team of the Year award.
Nicola McCleery, Marketing Manager Magners said:
“This is the sixth year we have sponsored the Sports Awards which has now established itself as one of the highlights of the sporting social calendar.
"Magners is now the number one packaged LAD drink in Northern Ireland and fastest growing LAD On Trade Brand. A key element of this success has been our strong association with sport. There is a very strong following from sports fans throughout Northern Ireland and we feel it is important to recognise that and give something back - hopefully by supporting the Sports Awards, this is what we are doing."
